This new policy supplements the existing Payment Policy for Telemedicine, for intensive outpatient therapy services (IOP) as well as psychotherapy services for crisis and group psychotherapy services delivered via telemedicine or telephone, on a temporary/ emergency basis.

Lactation Services via Telemedicine

Effective 03/20/2020 the Temporary/Emergency Policy for Preventive Medicine by Telemedicine provides consideration of benefits for lactation services (S9443) if the requirements of the policy are met.

Mental Health and Substance Use and Telemedicine

There are two payment policies that provide coverage for specific mental health and substance use disorder services, please note, one is by telehealth and one is by telephone.

Preventive Care by Telemedicine

This is a new temporary/ emergency payment policy for Preventive Medicine by Telehealth. This new policy supplements the existing Payment Policy for Telemedicine on a temporary/emergency basis and has been implemented in the context of the coronavirus pandemic and in an effort to improve social distancing.
5/1/2020 Update (retro to 3/13/2020):
Originally, the policy said that we would cover preventive services delivered via telemedicine for established patients over the age of 2. This revision removes the restrictions of “established patient” and also allows preventive visits for babies (with an in-person component to be performed for all preventive services later but especially for those delivered to those under the age of 2).
