Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Vermont’s local grants program helps Windham County schools advance physical activity and wellness skills development in support of vibrant student health.
Brattleboro, Vt., January 10, 2020—Applications are now open for Windham County Schools seeking funding for programs that support students’ physical activity and wellness. The Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Vermont (Blue Cross) Windham County Community Advisory Board (WCCAB) offers grants of up to $750 to area schools as part of Blue Cross’s long-standing commitment to supporting the health and well-being of all Vermonters. Applications for funding are due by Friday, February 14, 2020.
Since 2014, the board has given over $24,000 in grants to schools in the region to fund projects ranging from swimming and lacrosse programs to after-school cooking clubs and personal fitness programs. According to WSESU Superintendent and WCCAB member Lyle Holiday, students in Windham County have “benefitted greatly from the opportunities to increase physical activity and learn healthy life skills supported by this funding.” Megan Peek, Director of Community Relations & Health Promotion for Blue Cross, says the plan is proud to support creative efforts to improve student wellness and develop healthy habits. “These programs are an important way to offer immediate health benefits to students while supporting the development of lifelong healthy habits to reduce the long-term health risks associated with sedentary lifestyles,” says Peek.
The Windham County Community Advisory Board of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Vermont was formed in 2000 to identify health needs in the area and address those needs through programs, events and activities in the region. The Board consists of community leaders who are dedicated to improving the health of their neighbors and communities.
