Medicare Part D plans are sold by private companies, but they are regulated by the federal government. Every company that offers Medicare Part D prescription coverage must meet a minimum standard level of coverage.
Is Part D Coverage Important?
Medicare Part D may help to lower prescription drug costs and may protect you from higher costs in the future. It covers both brand-name and generic prescription drugs at participating pharmacies in your area.
You should consider joining a plan unless you will already have drug coverage that is at least as good as Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage. Just as with Original Medicare, it is important to investigate your options early. If you wait, you may have to pay more for your coverage later.
How Do I Enroll in Part D?
Medicare Part D coverage is available to anyone who is entitled to Medicare Part A and/or enrolled in Medicare Part B.
To get Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage, you must join a Medicare drug plan through a Prescription Drug Plan (PDP), or a Medicare Advantage Plan that offers Medicare prescription drug coverage (MA-PD). Plans vary in cost and drugs covered. You can compare the plans that are available to you at www.medicare.gov.
