In 2006, we launched the Vermont Caring Foundation to give charitable grants to Vermont programs and organizations that promote health and wellness for all Vermonters, particularly children and teenagers. In 2008, the foundation granted nearly $40,000 to five different initiatives, with more than half of that going towards the Blue Socks for Kids project.
Research has shown that warm underclothing is high on the list of needs among the low income and homeless people living in cold climates. To address these needs on a local level, we partnered with Cabot Hoisery Mills and financed their production of 10,000 pairs of merino wool socks to distribute to Vermont's neediest children through the state's community action agencies and seven homeless shelters.
