A Layperson’s Tips on Working Out in Front of the Tube

  • Don’t get frustrated if you don’t get all the moves in an aerobics tape on the first viewing. Even at a gym, it takes a couple of times through a routine before you catch on. All too soon, you’ll be doing the moves in your sleep.

  • Just because you’re not going to the gym, don’t be tempted to exercise in your jeans. Buy that cute little workout outfit. You’ll feel better about exercising and you may be able to move better, too. (You know, workout clothes do actually have a function.) Lay out your workout clothes at night if you’re planning on a morning of eye-opening exercise, so you won’t have to dig for them and you can get started right away. Of course, there is something to be said for exercising in your PJs, if it strikes your fancy.

  • Read the videotape box carefully. As you’ll see from our reviews, some of these tapes require equipment. Sadly, the video creators seem to think we were all born owning exercise steps and five-pound weights. (Sometimes even the box won’t warn you about all the props you need, but it’s worth a try.)

  • Lots of space is non-negotiable--especially if you have small children with small toys that can get caught under jumping feet. Under those conditions, even the most graceful aerobicist can break an ankle.

  • Our standard Vigor warning: Not every exercise is right for every person. Check with your physician before beginning any new fitness program, particularly if you have had health problems in the past.
