2002 Obesity Conference In the fall of 2002, BCBSVT sponsored a community symposium on the worsening obesity epidemic in Vermont. This successful event was the third in a series of annual health issues conferences. Participants gave the conference rave review in a post-event survey--rating it an average of 4.64 points on a five-point scale. Melinda Sothern, Ph.D., M.ED., C.E.P., of Louisiana State University and author of Trimkids, (see www.committed-to-kids.com), gave a keynote address. Other speakers included Jan Carney, Vermont's health commissioner, and Jean Harvey-Berino, who leads a weight-loss research and treatment program at the University of Vermont.
