Breastfeeding Help For New Moms

La Leche League is an international organization whose mission is "to help mothers worldwide to breastfeed through mother-to-mother support, encouragement, information, and education and to promote a better understanding of breastfeeding as an important element in the healthy development of the baby and mother." Local chapters exist throughout Vermont to help new mothers with their breastfeeding concerns.

"La Leche League was founded in 1956 by seven mothers in Illinois," says Mary Bibb, a leader of the Jericho group. "Those same women are still involved in some way, though some of them are grandmothers and great-grandmothers now. La Leche League is run by leaders who are all accredited by La Leche League International. We provide information and support for nursing mothers during meetings," Bibb explained.

"Meetings are held monthly. Some are at night and some during the day, depending on what works best in the area the meetings are held," Bibb said.
