We all have a stake in the future of our teenagers and the issues that challenge them every day. What About Teens?, a week-long multimedia event held from May 22-26, 2006, aimed to give teens a highly visible forum in which to discuss issues that matter to them and to explore modern life from their perspective.

Vermont Public Radio
On Switchboard, VPR’s call-in program, host Fran Stoddard talked with teens and adults about what’s important to young people.


  The history of What About Teens?

Online chat events
BCBSVT hosted online chat events on Monday evening to kick off the week, and again Thursday after Switchboard aired on Vermont Public Radio, giving teens a chance to discuss the issues with their peers.

The Young Writers Project
The Young Writers Project publishes weekly pages of exceptional student writing on Tuesdays in the Burlington Free Press and on www.youngwritersproject.org. Student writing arising from What About Teens? appeared beginning in late June. All week long the YWP’s website hosted online forums dedicated to teen issues. Check them out here.

Vermont Public Television
Vermont Public Television aired a full evening of programming dedicated to Vermont’s teenagers which included:

 • For Real — A documentary-style magazine show created for teens, by teens.

 • Public Square — A “Teens In Action” edition of VPT’s monthly public affairs program.

 • The Voices Project—The broadcast version of the original stage production created, inspired and performed by Vermont teens and produced by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Vermont and Kingdom County Productions.
