Blue Cross Blue Shield Vermont

A program for expecting parents

Every expectant mother wants the best for her baby. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Vermont and The Vermont Health Plan have found some great ways to help you give your baby the best health care available, even before he or she is born.

Our Better Beginnings® program works with you and your health care provider to help you have a healthy pregnancy and an uncomplicated delivery. We also provide some special benefits to make your first few weeks with your baby more worry-free.

We send you educational materials that help make you confident about fulfilling your needs during pregnancy and those of your newborn. You also learn by speaking with our Better Beginnings case managers throughout your pregnancy.

How does it work?

Better Beginnings allows you to select from valuable benefits including the following:
• An assessment to help you determine if you are at high risk for complications
• Up to $75 in reimbursement for childbirth classes
• Educational materials including popular books, brochures and a baby care video
• Visits from registered nurses and/or homemakers in your home after the birth of your child
• A free infant/child CPR or first aid course through local Red Cross (only available to Vermont residents)
• Other special benefits recommended by our specialty nurse case managers if you are at high risk for complications

How to sign up

To participate in the Better Beginnings program, just call our Customer Service department by using the telephone number listed on your I.D. card. We’ll send you a Better Beginnings Health Risk Assessment (HRA) questionnaire.

After you have completed and returned the HRA, we will send you a book of your choice and our portfolio of Better Beginnings information. Our registered nurse case managers will keep in touch with you throughout your pregnancy and will talk with you after the birth of your baby.

Our case management program

By completing a comprehensive assessment of your answers to our HRA, our Better Beginnings case manager will work with you and your provider to find ways to help you reduce or eliminate complications during pregnancy or delivery. If your caregiver or our case manager detects a problem, we may decide to provide special benefits for you to help you toward a healthy birth.

Our specialty nurse case managers will:

• Work with you to set goals for your pregnancy and help you achieve them
• Provide you with additional resources/information on certain aspects of your pregnancy
• Work together with your health care providers to help you follow your plan of care
• Offer additional emotional support during your pregnancy and post-delivery
• Help you to locate and gain access to additional community resources

After your baby is born

After your baby is born, we will send you additional educational materials. Our case manager will contact you to see how you and your baby are doing and to offer you additional guidance and support.

The first few weeks with a new baby can be tiring and difficult, even when the delivery goes exactly as planned. That’s why we built a host of post-delivery benefits into the Better Beginnings program.

You may take advantage of coverage for up to three skilled nursing visits from your local home health agency in your home after you and your baby leave the hospital.

The nurse who visits you may:
• Check your baby to make sure he or she is healthy
• Discuss your recovery and check on your general health after delivery
• Administer certain procedures or blood tests requested by your baby’s pediatrician
• Help you with any concerns or questions you may have about feeding your baby
• Consult with you on breastfeeding your baby

You may also choose to take advantage of up to nine hours of homemaking services in your home after you and your baby leave the hospital.

The homemaker may:
• Cook meals for you and your family
• Help with light housekeeping
• Help care for older children while you and your baby get to know one another

Of course, you may choose to use all, some or none of these benefits, depending on your needs and wishes.
