Medicare Supplemental Plans
Although Original Medicare offers important basic medical coverage, there are still "gaps" in the coverage it provides. Medicare Supplemental Plans (sometimes called Medigap plans) are plans sold by private companies that offer additional coverage to help lower your remaining out-of-pocket costs and increase your peace of mind.
Once you enroll in Original Medicare, you can purchase a Medicare Supplemental Plan. Medicare Supplemental Plans have letter names, like “Plan A,” “Plan G,” and “Plan N.”
What do Medicare Supplemental Plans Cover?
Medicare Supplement Plans assist with health care costs not paid by original Medicare (Parts A & B) like coinsurance, copays and deductibles.
All Medicare Supplemental Plans are standardized by the federal government. This means that every company that sells Medicare Supplemental Plan A, for example, must offer the exact same set of benefits for that plan.
Make sure to choose the supplemental plan that will meet your needs today as well as in the future!
For example, if you’re a Vermonter who spends winters elsewhere, consider choosing a plan that includes Part B Excess coverage.
“Part B excess” covers the additional fees that providers in many states are permitted to charge Medicare customers. While providers in Vermont are not allowed to charge these fees, if you move or live elsewhere, you may end up paying more.
